Is It MATH or MATHS?
This has been a question that I have pondered for a long time. Okay, I know, I know, I need to get a life. Well, mathematics is my life. I like mathematics. I think about mathematics a lot and I like thinking about mathematics a lot.
It has bothered me for a long time that people call it mathS. The word mathematics is NOT plural. Just because we have an 'S' at the end of some words in English to make them plural does not mean they actually are plural. Take the word 'has' for example. It is definitely NOT plural. In fact, it is used in the singular case. The plural of 'has' is 'have' as in 'he has . . .' or 'they have . . .'.
So, since I know I am right(?!) I have always been upset when someone calls it maths instead of math. However, I have recently mellowed about this. I still think it should be called math but I am not letting other people calling it maths bother me. Why am I telling you this? NOT because I think you (and everyone else) should be calling it math but because . . . hmmm, I don't really know why I am telling you this. Go ahead and call it what you want. Just make sure your notation is correct!!! And have fun with mathematics (or math or maths).
